The History of Retailing…Lesson #1 #Sell

February 11, 2014

Today I wanted to share my experience of Retailing from 1923 to today….and you are correct I was not alive in 1923…but my Great-Grandfather set up the first family shop in March 1923.

The business he set up was a provisions shop on an English High Street at the ripe old age of 23.  He was a very driven and ambitious man, who decided that a provisions shop was the best way he could provide for his family then and into the future.

In February 1923 an advert appeared in the local newspaper:

“H Chapman Will open
His New Grocery and Provisions Shop.
Choice selection of Cooked Meats, Dennys Bacon and Farm butter.
Personal attention to all orders”

What I love about the advert is the simplicity and the clarity – I think you know what you can expect when you walk into his store.

This is the opening advert and to me it shows that the basic retail skills are exactly the same now as they were in 1923.

If you are opening a Retail Store or online store today – what is the most important first message?

“Tell the customer what you sell”

I have many more hints and tips from my Great-Grandfather and my own journey which I will share with you over the next few months

I wish you every success in your Retail and Etail world
